When a blue-blooded equestrienne trapped in a deteriorating marriage to
a closeted cardiologist with murder on his mind befriends her new neighbor,
the young, adventurous trophy wife of an aging Texas oil baron, new money,
excess and sexual intrigue meld with country club conservatism and the
destinies of two families are forever changed. As their improbable
friendship unfolds over the course of a few weeks, the women influence one
another in ways no one could ever imagine.
Affairs of Affluence, a character-driven
literary novel with broad commercial appeal of 110,000 words, integrates
two love stories, social commentary, domestic drama and a murder plot with
historical information, pop culture savvy and spicy sex scenes. Readers
come to love or hate densely drawn personalities while they watch scandals
unfold and lives change within the privileged world of the Gold Coast of
Long Island.
Liz Fitzgerald is proud of her old-fashioned values and even older
money. They have kept her in an unhappy marriage to Maurice, a cardiologist
struggling to repress his nascent homosexuality. From her new neighbor
Cindy, the wife of Texas billionaire Bull Wallingford, Liz learns that in
order to be happy, she must take risks. When Cindy's accidental
meeting with a Kurdish teenager triggers an explosive love affair, she
unconsciously learns from Liz that life is more than using people to her
advantage. Over the course of a month, the rarified world of the North
Shore sees public scandal, the dissolution of two marriages, a murder plot
driven by greed, personal and large-scale catastrophe and unexpected
chances for redemption. The surprise ending will prompt debate.
Affairs of Affluence is
best characterized as a work of contemporary fiction, the appeal of which
is not limited to an exclusively female readership. While the novel
incorporates some of the "chick-lit" genre's requisite
pop-culture and fashion references, the history of Long Island's Gold Coast
threaded throughout is likely to be of interest to men as well. Older readers
will appreciate the theme of finding a second chance at love later in life,
and younger readers will connect to the improbable love story involving the
teenage Iraqi refugee A diverse audience will be satisfied that after
characters' lives are turned upside down, happy endings are possible after
all.
Randy Beth Yaskal incorporated a music management agency at the age of
18 and has owned a translation and interpreting agency in Charlottesville,
Virginia since 1989. She has a degree in criminal justice and worked as a
private investigator for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Originally from the
South Shore of Long Island, she moved to the North Shore’s Gold Coast,
where she frequented the places described in the novel and lived among the
people about whom she writes.
Co-author Eva Somers (pseudonym for Evie Ward) has a degree in English
from Princeton. After working as a radio personality and broadcast
journalist in the US and Europe, she is now happily anonymous as a writer
and linguist for a classified government project in the Middle East.
Both women are free to travel and promote Affairs of Affluence.
The completed manuscript is available for
immediate delivery. Affairs of
Affluence is the first in a 3-novel series. The second book addresses
Liz and Greg's new life, Cindy's acclimation to Taimour's world and
religion (including a trip with him to Iraq after the start of the war) and
Maurice's plan to seek revenge on all those he perceives as having wronged
him. The final novel is set 15 years later and focuses on the two couples'
children.
I’d like to become a patron of the arts for this author.
